This week’s Latino Single of the Week is “Malito” by Señor Flavio. As the bassist for Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Señor Flavio provided the bottom end to the group’s funky mash-ups of ska, rock, hip-hop, and Argentinean grooves. For this solo cut, he keeps the genre definitions at arm’s length - working in an uptempo skank while mixing up lightning-quick smooth lyrics against some gruff dancehall-like toasting.
This week’s Single of the Week is “Lights & Music” by Cut Copy. Cut Copy is a band from Melbourne, Australia. Their sound, often labeled as indie dance and/or electroclash , draws considerable influence from 80s new wave and post punk genres. The band describe the track as “a trans-galactic voyage featuring epic synth breakdowns and more than a sprinkling of Goldsworthy magic.”
This week’s Discovery Download is “She Left Me for Jesus” by Hayes Carll from the Country store. If Texas-born Hayes Carll had any thicker of a Southern twang in his voice, you’d need a translator to get through his raspy country-rock. “She Left Me for Jesus” is a whisky-added sing-along for the final moments before last call.
This week’s Single of the Week is “Love Don’t Live Here” by Lady Antebellum. Lady Antebellum is a trio from Geordia that’s just about to release its self-titled debut. Ostensibly a country music group, the harmony-rich trio plays a warm mix of heartland-style rock on this weeks Free Single of the Week.
This week’s Latino Single of the Week is “La Duda” by Chana. Chana is Rosanna Tavarez, a vocalist and songwriter of Dominican heritage who grew up in New York and Miami. Along the way, she’s built up a voracious passion for music, from dance pop to UK alternative bands to underground American indie rock.
This week’s Discovery Download is “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Puppini Sisters. The Puppini Sisters are a musical trio specializing in 1940s-style close harmony vocal music. This track is the 80s pop classic “Walk Like an Egyptian” from the bangles done in the style of the Andrew Sisters, and it’s brilliant.
This week’s Latino Single of the Week is “Ay, Ay, Ay” by Karyme Lozano. Mexico City’s Karyme Lucia Lozano is one of the most recognizable actresses in international television. She is best known as a star of telenovelas such as Amar Sin Limites, Tres Mujeres, El Manantial, ”Niña Amada Mía and Soñar No Cuesta Nada. This track is from her debut album, Prohibido.
This week’s Single of the Week is “Cheap and Cheerful” by The Kills. The Kills are an indie band formed by vocalist Alison Mosshart and British guitarist Jamie “Hotel” Hince. The group’s minimal punk sound has shades of 60s biker chic in their image, while their music is a mixture of PJ Harvey, Jesus and Mary Chain and the indie blues of Royal Trux. This week’s Discovery Download is “Better Brother” by Madita. Madita comes to use from the world of downtempo electronics, where she has made a name for herself as a vocalist. Her debut album has less identifiable trappings - integrating classic soul, jazz, an pop with uninhibited style.
