This week’s Single of the Week is “Cheap and Cheerful” by The Kills. The Kills are an indie band formed by vocalist Alison Mosshart and British guitarist Jamie “Hotel” Hince. The group’s minimal punk sound has shades of 60s biker chic in their image, while their music is a mixture of PJ Harvey, Jesus and Mary Chain and the indie blues of Royal Trux. This week’s Single of the Week is Mercy by Duffy. Duffy has quickly become one of 2008’s most exciting musical figures in the U.K. The sound on “Mercy” is one that’s out of time - glassy go-go soul with smoky undertones of regret. The young Duffy takes centerstage and does her best Dusty Springfield. It’s a finger-snapping Motown groove with some white-hot soul power underneath.
